The iPhone 4, dubbed the world's thinnest smart phone, will be sold by both Maxis Bhd and DiGi.Com Bhd, the only two mobile operators that have rights to sell iPhones.
"Maxis Bhd will launch iPhone 4, the thinnest smart phone in the world with the highest resolution display ever built in a phone, in Malaysia in the coming months," the company said in a statement yesterday.
A DiGi spokesperson, when contacted, confirmed the company will also be bringing in the phone and it will be launched sometime in the second half.
The iPhone 4 is expected to be available in the US, the UK, Japan, France or Germany on June 24, with pre-orders to start on June 15.
Based on reports, it will be available in another 18 countries by July, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
It will be released in another 24 countries in August and another 44 countries in September.
Although Maxis and DiGi remained tightlipped on the exact launch date, as well as the pricing of the phones, analysts expects the iPhone 4 will be priced around the same level of the current top-of-the-line model, the 3GS, when it was first launched.
The iPhone 4, which comes in the 16GB and 32GB model, is expected to be priced at US$199 and US$299 (RM661 and RM993) respectively in the US under a 24-month contract. The iPhone 3GS, when first launched last year, was sold for US$199 (16GB) and US$299 (32GB) respectively.
One of the main highlights of iPhone 4's new feature is its video call capability, something which the current models can't perform.
To date, more than 33 million iPhones have been sold, comprising more than 12.6 million iPhone 3G and 3GS units
