In its press release, AirAsia highlighted that on hand to present Lorenzo with the winning trophy was AirAsia group chief executive officer (CEO), Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes, with the AirAsia stewardesses also gracing the podium with their presence.

Speaking at the race, Fernandes said, “It has been a fantastic weekend here at Silverstone and a great start to our three-year sponsorship of the MotoGP.

British people have really embraced AirAsia and our presence here this weekend has been a great opportunity to spread the word even further about low-cost travel throughout Asia and Australia.” Fernandes said sponsoring the British MotoGP was part of AirAsia’s long term strategy to build global brand awareness.

In particular, Fernandes was rooting for 19-year-old Malaysian homegrown talent Zulfahmi, of team AirAsia Sepang International Circuit who finished just short of the four final laps following an engine failure in his debut performance in the 125cc category.

Zulfahmi said, “Overall I am pleased with my performance. It has been a challenge competing against so many experienced riders who are more familiar with the track. Even with a disappointing engine failure during the race, my lap time has improved and I look forward to coming back again next year.”

“Overall, it has been a good day for the AirAsia-SIC team. A big congratulations to Zulfahmi who came to Silverstone and put every effort into his performance. He raced well despite his injury. Fahmi is young and has a great career ahead of him, with more practice and experience we are confident he can become a rider at the top of his game,” said Fernandes.
