Nokia unveils new smartphones

SINGAPORE: Nokia showcased two new smartphones, the N8 and X5, at its Nokia Connection 2010 event.

The N8 is the company's first smartphone to feature the Symbian^3 operating system. The OS retains its familiar user interface but with a few new enhancements such as three customisable homescreens that can be populated with widgets downloaded from the Ovi Store.

The N8 has a unibody design constructed from aluminium and will be available in five different colours.

The phone, which has a 3.5in capacitive touchscreen, can handle HD video playback and records 720p HD video (with stereo sound) using its 12-megapixel camera. The camera also has a built-in Xenon flash.

The N8 simplifies social networking as both Twitter and Facebook feeds are accessible from a single interface. Also, the phone allows updates to be shared across multiple social networks easily.

The smartphone also allows users to watch web TV that includes local content from TV3 and 8TV.
X5

Meanwhile, the X5 is a compact phone that has a 2.36in screen, a slide out Qwerty keypad and a pair of really loud speakers.

One of the device's unique function is its shuffle feature - when the phone is rotated on its back, it'll skip to a different music track.

Other features include a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash and 2GB internal memory and SD card slot.

The smartphones will be available in the third quarter of this year. The N8 and X5 are expected to cost 370 euros (RM1,450) and 165 euros (RM650) respectively.
