Penang Gov: stood on its ground to bar sports betting

Guan Eng: Take a stand on sports betting.

The federal government has to respond if it still stands by its decision to allow sports betting in the country.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng on Tuesday, June 8 said there appeared to be confusion now as to the actual scenario pertaining to the sport betting issue.

The state government has stood on its ground to bar sports betting in Penang including rejecting the application of the new sports betting licensee, Ascot Sports Sdn Bhd which is owned by businessman Tan Sri Vincent Tan.

"There seems to be some flip flop on the issue, just as there were flip flops in other decisions made by the government like the goods and sales tax (GST), New Economic Model and also the new system to sell petrol.

"There just seems to be too much flip flop and it is up to the government to once and for all clarify the matter.

"As far as the Penang state government is concerned, we are firm in our decision to ban it," Lim said Tuesday at a press conference.

Lim also announced a survey from June 10 to 12 to garner community feedback on a proposed pilot project to green road dividers, traffic islands and some pavements along Carnavon Street on the island.
