Construction sector: Overweight

AmResearch sees UEM Builders, Gamuda and IJM Corp as potential front-runners for the light-rail transit extension civil jobs

AMRESEARCH Sdn Bhd said companies that are potential front-runners for the light-rail transit (LRT) extension civil jobs include UEM (Builders Bhd), Gamuda Bhd and IJM Corp Bhd, due to their track record.

"Equally, foreign giants such as Siemens and Bombardier are among leading candidates to secure the systems works - with a potentially smaller role for local outfits such as Scomi Bhd," it said in a report yesterday.

AmResearch added that both the civil and mechanical and electrical portions of the RM7 billion project would likely be equally split based on a cost/km of roughly RM200 million.

Late last month, Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd said it hoped to start the first phase of construction for the LRT extension works at both the Kelana Jaya and Ampang lines by year-end.

A pre-bid briefing with 17 pre-qualified contractors was held on June 22, where the parties concerned were required to submit tender bids within six weeks from a visit to the proposed LRT sites on June 27.

Construction works are expected to take between three and four years to complete.

The research house added that maiden contracts for the main civil works package could be given out by November after a three-month evaluation period by Syarikat Prasarana. This includes Phase 1 of the facilities (civil) package for both Ampang and Kelana Jaya lines.
