MAS buys RM2.2b engines for new Airbus aircraft

Malaysian Airline System Bhd (MAS) has signed a deal with Pratt & Whitney to purchase 34 engines worth RM2.2 billion (US$680 million) to power its 17 new Airbus aircraft.

In a statement yesterday, MAS said the PW4170 Advantage70 engines would be used to power 15 passenger aircraft and two freighters, which were ordered in March this year.

As part of its fleet renewal programme, MAS has ordered up to 25 A330-300s and four A330-200Fs at US$4.5 billion list price, which includes the cost of engines.

The aircraft, which will be delivered from 2011 to 2015, will serve the growing markets of South Asia, China, North Asia, Australia and the Middle East. The airline has also ordered up to 55 B737-800s and six A380s.

The national carrier’s current fleet of nine A330-300s and three A330-200s are equipped with PW4168 engines, while its 10 passenger B747-400 aircraft and two B747-400 freighters are powered by PW4056 engines.

“We are happy with the performance and support for our A330s and B747s aircraft engines. We are confident that we will enjoy even better engine performance and that Pratt & Whitney will continue to deliver the same level of support with the PW4170 engines,” MAS managing director and CEO Tengku Datuk Azmil Zahruddin said.

“Pratt & Whitney looks forward to continuing its strong relationship with our partner Malaysia Airlines,” said Todd Kallman, president, commercial engines and global services, Pratt & Whitney.

MAS said the latest version of the A330-300 would offer the airline greater levels of economic efficiency, with lower fuel burn and maintenance costs.

“The PW4170 Advantage70 engines contribute to this performance, making the aircraft one of the quietest, most fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly planes flying today.

“For passengers, the new aircraft will feature a restyled, high comfort cabin. In Malaysia Airlines’ layout, this will feature six-abreast seating in business class with flat bed seats and eight abreast in economy, with all seats fitted with the latest in-flight entertainment systems,” it said.

MAS and Pratt & Whitney had also signed a memorandum of understanding in December 2009 to set up a joint-venture facility for engine nacelle repair in Malaysia. The new facility will become part of the Pratt & Whitney Global Service Partner network.
