SARAWAK exported RM2.5 billion of timber and timber products in the first four months of this year.
This is a 33 per cent increase in value from the RM1.9 billion recorded in the same period last year, according to the Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corp (STIDC).
Export of logs rose 50 per cent; sawn timber, 19 per cent; plywood, 37 per cent; and moulding, 58 per cent.
Particle board exports were up 241 per cent; fibreboard, 17 per cent; laminated board/flooring, 83 per cent; and woodchips, 15 per cent.
India was again the biggest buyer of logs, importing 794,999 cu m worth RM406 million, the STIDC said.
"This is an increase of 33 per cent in volume compared with 599,254 cu m in the same period last year," it said in its bi-monthly newsletter, Perkasa.
There were big increases in log exports to China, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and Thailand, the STIDC added.
Sawn timber experienced a 19 per cent increase in export volume compared with the same period last year.
Sarawak exported 293,223 cu m against 247,343 cu m previously, with the value rising to RM268 million from RM226 million. Thailand remained the biggest buyer, accounting for 99,143 cu m worth RM89 million.
Plywood export volume was 31 per cent higher at 982,570 cu m compared with 748,869 cu m previously, contributing RM1.3 billion, or 37 per cent, of the total revenue.
Japan was again the top buyer, paying RM597 million for 432,165 cu m, or 46 per cent of the volume exported.
Overall, the first four months saw dynamic growth for the state's wood industries.
On another front, the STIDC and the Sarawak Timber Association have joined forces to look into allegations that eight local plywood exporters had dumped their plywood in South Korea. - Bernama
