Stocks to watch: Malaysian Mosaics, Unisem, JCY, BDRB, Tenaga

Key regional markets are expected to advance on Wednesday, July 14 while at Bursa Malaysia, the FBM KLCI will extend its sixth-straight day of gains, underpinned by the strong overnight close on Wall Street.

US stocks rallied on Tuesday after Alcoa's quarterly results heartened investors that had fled to the sidelines on jitters about the sustainability of the economic recovery, according to Reuters.

Intel posted net income of US$2.9 billion, or 51 cents a share, versus a net loss of US$398 million, or 7 cents a share, in the second quarter of 2009, when Intel's results included a US$1.4 billion fine by the European Commission.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 146.75 points, or 1.44 percent, to 10,363.02, the sixth day of gains. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index rose 16.59 points, or 1.54 percent, to 1,095.34. The Nasdaq Composite Index jumped 43.67 points, or 1.99 percent, to 2,242.03.

Even so, Reuters reported the recent low volume suggests the market's longest winning streak since mid-April could be running out of steam, while the cost of protection in the options market against a market drop keeps growing.

Stocks to watch at Bursa Malaysia include MALAYSIAN MOSAICS BHD [], chips component-related manufacturers Unisem, MPI and JCY International, property company Bandar Raya Development Bhd (BDRB) and TENAGA NASIONAL BHD []. Shipping logistics player, Alam Maritim’s one for two bonus issue will go ex on Wednesday.

MMosaics received a privatisation proposal from its major shareholder Gek Poh (Holdings) Sdn Bhd at RM2.30 cash per share.

This is a premium of 30% and 41% over the five-day and three-month volume weighted average market price of Malaysian Mosiacs shares up to and including July 9 of RM1.77 and RM1.63 respectively.

Intel’s strong earnings bode well for companies including Unisem, MPI and JCY International.

Meanwhile, BDRB is teaming up with MULTI-PURPOSE HOLDINGS BHD [] (MPHB) to develop several parcels of land owned by MPHB in Penang and Selangor.


BDRB inked the MoUs with MPHB to work toegther and develop several parcels of land in Penang measuring about 80 acres, Rawang (266.7 acres) and Gombak (324 acres) which are owned by MPHB.

Tenaga Nasional Bhd will release its third quarter results for the period ended May 31. The power giant is expected to announce a stronger set of earnings on-year, underpinned by strong demand for electricity. It is also expected to benefit from the stronger ringgit against major currencies, including the yen and US dollar.

In SIME DARBY BHD [], Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, maintained that the general financial position of conglomerate Sime Darby Bhd was strong, amidst ongoing concerns arising from huge cost overruns incurred by the conglomerate’s energy and utilities division.
