Apple drives CG Computers

THE continued demand for Apple products ranging from the iPads, iPhones and other smart gadgets is set to see more outlets opened this year nationwide.

Apple premium and longest selling reseller, CG Computers Sdn Bhd, is looking at building six new Apple stores and upgrade at least four of its current ones.

An investment of RM11 million has been earmarked for this purpose, the company's director Li Chau Ging told Business Times.

Penang-based CG Computers has been serving the Macintosh market since 1995, via its nine Switch outlets in Penang, Klang Valley and Sarawak and one service centre in Penang.

However, Li declined to name the proposed locations of the new outlets, citing competitive advantage reason.

Asked on how the response has been at Switch outlets since the iPhone 4s was launched in Malaysia last month, Li said: "While a lot of people tend to expect a new look with this new phone, the iPhone 4s has broken all iPhone records worldwide".

He also declined to disclose actual figures.

"The iPhone 4s has been re-designed on the inside and with the uncanny, yet at times, humorous Siri software.

"From the perspective of our Switch stores, we are unable to gauge the iPhone's actual response in Malaysia as our iPhone stocks are being allocated by the telcos," Li said.

On whether Switch outlets have experienced either a spike or a reduction in sales following the death of Apple founder Steve Jobs in October last year, Li said: "There is no relation between Jobs' passing and the sales of Apple products as people are buying Apple products not because of its founder or inventors, but rather, because the products are good.

"Year-on-year, Switch is growing at 138 per cent with much of the contribution coming from strong iPads sales and apart from professionals and designers who use the iPad, the item has now become a way of life for many and from different age groups and walks of life, as customers begin to see better integration between Apple products."
