Enough water for next five to six months

Last Updated: 5:41pm, May 16, 2014

SHAH ALAM (May 16): There is enough water supply to last for the next five to six months, the Selangor state government said today.

"With the current water level in our dams, constant rainfall and management efforts by the state, we are confident there will be enough water for the next 5-6 month, meaning past 'bulan puasa' (fasting period) in June." said state Executive Councillor Dr. Ahmad Yunus Hairi.

He added that the wet season will continue till end of May or early June.

"Current water levels in our reserve stands at 41.75%, but this isn't a comfortable level yet, we hope to raise it till 65%"

The state is looking into using the Royal Rainmaking Technology from Thailand to create rainfall when the dry spell hits again.

"Previously, we were uncertain if water rationing will end, and we are monitoring the situation on a weekly basis, but there will be sufficient continuous water supply for now and we are conserving rainfall to be treated when needed."

Earlier this month, the Health Minister had asked the state to stop using mining pools as alternative water source as it contained hazardous heavy metal traces.

However, he said the state has yet to begin diverting such water from the reserve into the river.

"The decision to use this alternative water source was made professionally. If we are sure that it's safe for consumption, why not? Its just a public perception that such water is dangerous."

"If we really need it, we'll use it. But of course, we will carry out frequent sampling and studies to make sure its safe." added Yunus, who is in charge of the state Youth, Sports, Infrastructure and Public Amenities

Furthermore, he said that analysis results of alternative water source samples carried out in 2011 to 2013 by the Department of Chemistry and Selangor Health Ministry, have proven the water safe.
