PERODUA welcomes partnership with PROTON

Second national carmaker MD says there are areas for collaboration

KUALA LUMPUR: Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) welcomes any form of collaboration with Proton Holdings Bhd, said its managing director Aminar Rashid Salleh yesterday.

“As you know, we are already a supplier of cylinder heads to Proton and we share some common vendors,” he said after the signing of a memorandum of understanding on supply-chain financing programme between Perodua and CIMB Group.

“There are definitely areas for us to collaborate,” he added.

In a recent report, the Proton Vendors Association (PVA) said merging Proton and Perodua into a single entity would be a step forward to boost the Malaysian automotive industry.

PVA president Datuk Dr Wan Mohamed Wan Embong was quoted as saying that it would be timely for both national car manufacturers to look at the positive impact of consolidation as this could help the industry to expand globally.

Perodua, which was set up in 1993, is a joint venture between Malaysian and Japanese partners.

The shareholders are UMW Corp Sdn Bhd with 38% stake, MBM Resources Bhd (20%), Daihatsu Motor Co Ltd (20%), PNB Equity Resource Corp Sdn Bhd (10%), Daihatsu (M) Sdn Bhd (5%), Mitsui & Co Ltd (4.2%) and Mitsui & Co (Asia Pacific) Pte Ltd (2.8%).

“In the first place, we do not know whether it is in the form of consolidation or merger. It is a subject matter that has been speculated by everybody. Consolidation can be in many forms,” Aminar said.

“As far as Perodua is concerned, we have not been officially notified or called for discussion. It is very difficult for me to make any comment. At the end of the day, it is the shareholders’ call.”

According to Aminar, Perodua’s focus has always been on compact cars and it will continue to improve on its strength as there is room for improvement.

He also said Proton and Perodua had different business models but there were still areas for collaboration. — Bernama
