TELECOMMUNICATIONS group Celcom Axiata Bhd (6888) will spend RM800 million, or 80 per cent of its planned RM1 billion capital expenditure, to set up 900 base stations, enhance third-generation broadband and buy land over the next 12 months.
Celcom will also upgrade its existing base stations and increase bandwith capacity fourfold by the year-end to help it penetrate the broadband market further.
Its director of broadband Jefri Ahmad Tambi believes that the local broadband usage will increase substantially. Hence, it is important for Celcom to keep up with rising demand.
"We are looking at ways to tailor to our existing and potential customers and give them better broadband coverage by enhancing and upgrading our broadband services," Jefri said.
He was speaking to reporters after the launch of Celcom's new entry-level broadband packages in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
Celcom head of broadband Harcharan Singh stressed on the importance of broadband penetration reaching rural areas, in line with the government's National Broadband Plan.
"Of course we need to focus on highly populated areas. But we also need to reach the masses in the rural areas.
"By reaching to this population, we can increase the level of IT literacy in the country," Harcharan said.
Celcom is now offering basic broadband packages that start at RM38 for the first three months, RM10 cheaper than its competitors.
The group recently signed a memorandum of understanding with DiGi Telecommunications Bhd for a network and infrastructure collaboration.
Currently, it has a 52 per cent share of the mobile broadband segment and 22 per cent of the overall broadband market.
For its first quarter ended March 31 this year, it posted a net profit of RM441 million, up 24 per cent from RM357 million a year ago.
Group revenue increased by 15 per cent to RM1.7 billion from RM1.48 billion previously.
