Fancy becoming a googler?

Malaysians now have the chance to work for Google Inc, owner of the world's most popular Internet search engine, as the US giant has opened an office in Kuala Lumpur.
It is looking for sales, marketing and public relations executives and for starters, there will be about eight positions to fill.

The Malaysian office is Google's second base in Southeast Asia after Singapore, which opened four years ago.

Google, famous for perks like free gourmet food at its California office, is ranked fourth in Fortune Magazine's latest "100 Best Companies to Work For" list.

Globally, it is also on a hiring spree this year, planning to add more than 6,000 people to its workforce. Last year, it employed about 4,500 new employees.

Declining to reveal the group's investment in Malaysia, country business head Sajith Sivanandan asked job seekers to check its website, www.google.com.my/jobs for job openings.

"Malaysia is a very significant country in Southeast Asia in terms of digital economy and tech-savvy population," he said during a media briefing yesterday.

Also present were International Trade and Industry deputy minister Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir and Google Southeast Asia managing director Julian Persaud.

Google hopes to tap Malaysia's huge potential in online advertising.

In developed countries like the US and the UK, online advertising commands more than 25 per cent of advertising expenditure, but Malaysia, like most Asian countries, falls far behind with only about 2 per cent.

On average, Malaysians spend about 15 hours a month online while the youth segment spend double the time.

"There is a huge gap between the amount of time spent by consumers and where Malaysian businesses are providing information to customers online," said Sajith.

"With our expansion into this region, Google would like to educate and drive investment online," he added.

Malaysia has 17 million Internet users and household broadband penetration now stands at 55.6 per cent, surpassing the initial target of 50 per cent by the end of 2010.- By Zurinna Raja Adam, btimes.com.my
