AIRASIA offers direct daily flights to Myanmar

KUCHING: AirAsia Bhd (AirAsia) is extending its route network to another Southeast Asian country with direct daily flights to the city of Yangon in Myanmar. The new route will commence services from July 20, 2010.

In a press release yesterday, AirAsia noted, to celebrate the introduction of the new route, it will be offering all-in fares for Kuala Lumpur to Yangon from as low as RM29 (US$10) one way. Booking starts from June 14 to June 20, 2010, for the travel period of July 20, 2010 until May 8, 2011. Promotional seats are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis and made exclusively online via www.airasia.com.

AirAsia’s foray into Southeast Asia’s largest country, Myanmar, from its Kuala Lumpur hub completes the ten countries under the Asean (Association of South East Asian Nations) network. AirAsia currently flies to Yangon from its Bangkok hub with daily flights. The low-cost airline provides an extensive route network throughout the Asean region with 1530 flights a week from its nine hubs situated in Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand (Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Kota Kinabalu, Bangkok, Phuket, Denpasar, Surabaya, Jakarta, and Bandung) for the second consecutive year.

AirAsia’s regional head of commercial, Kathleen Tan commented, “Myanmar will see a big boost in their tourist entries with this new daily direct flight from Kuala Lumpur to Yangon, as our guests from Europe, China, India, Australia and the Asean region utilising our Kuala Lumpur hub now has a more affordable option to travel to Myanmar.

“AirAsia’s affordable fares will also enable the Burmese workforce in Malaysia to return home and visit their families more often. Avid travellers and backpackers looking for the Asian experience can now add Myanmar to their list, as AirAsia’s entry into this market offers greater connectivity options from our Kuala Lumpur hub at a much lower fare.”

This new route will be serviced by the Airbus A320 aircraft with a 180-passenger capacity. AirAsia looks to boost tourism activities within the Asean region with this addition of flights connecting Kuala Lumpur and Yangon directly.
